A doula is really indispensable for expecting parents. She provides prenatal education and helps prepare parents for the possibilities during labor and birth. She is available on call in the weeks before and after the due date. Once the mother starts labor and requests the help of her doula, the doula does not leave her until after the baby is born. She provides physical and emotional support to both mother and her partner, and helps the partner be as involved as he wishes. A doula can help to physically comfort the mother and keep her focused through contractions. She can also explain procedures and provide information in order for the parents to make "on the spot" decisions. She helps establish breastfeeding after the birth and makes sure that mom and her partner are comfortable before leaving them to enjoy their new family.
